Re: Twilight Zone Magazine- June 1988

Dear Mr. Byrd,

As you know, in its June 1988 issue, Twilight Zone Magazine published an interview entitled “Truth’s Bodyguard” that quoted interviewee James Randi as stating:

Eldon Byrd was the one – along with Geller – who launched a blackmail campaign against me and accused me of being a child molester. Byrd is now in prison in Washington, D.C. for child molesting – and is going to be there for the next six years.

Mr. Randi had been a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Grant and was a member of the Executive Council of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal. Based on this, Montcalm Publishing, Twilight Zone and the author, Stanley Wiater believed Mr. Randi to be a reliable and credible source of information, who was in a position to know the information stated in the interview. We subsequently learned that, in this instance, this was not the case.

We acknowledge that the above-quoted statement was false, and sincerely regret the error. In particular, we acknowledge that to our knowledge, you were not and have never been in prison for child molesting, and indeed have never been charged or convicted of the offense of child molestation. We also know of no facts establishing any truth to the statement that you or Mr. Uri Geller launched a blackmail campaign against James Randi or that you ever called James Randi a child molester. The October 1988 issue of Twilight Zone carried a letter from Mr. Randi in which he, in part, admitted the falsity of his prior statement.

As the publisher of Twilight Zone, Montcalm Publishing Corporation, regrets this error, as does Mr. Wiater. We apologize to you, to your former wife Judith Byrd, to your family and friends, and anyone else who knows you or knows of you.
