Mindbender

Mindbender
Interview with
Uri Geller

World-famous for his spoon-bending and clock-repairing psychic powers, Uri Geller is now on the Net. Cotton Ward feels the power.
Uri is doing his daily 15 km cycling exercises. “If my body’s fit then my mind’s fit too,” he explains. “I’ve got to keep in good shape so my psychic powers work effectively. It’s a strain using my powers. Sometimes when I try to bend a spoon it doesn’t always work. And I can’t bend one spoon after another immediately. It’s too draining. I’m just a human being.” All this spoon-bending can be exhausting, and Geller is still looking for a sponsor for his Net challenge. Is it possible to use psychic powers via the Net to bend a spoon that’s locked in a thick safe? Well, we’re about to find out. Because Golfer is asking Net users to try and achieve this feat. And it’s worth summoning up those other-worldly powers for, because the grand prize is $1 million.
The spoon is locked in his Berkshire home and live pictures of it will be appearing on the Net any day now at https://www.urigeller.com/ Anyone who bends the spoon will be invited to take part in paranormal tests via the telephone with Geller. Those able to demonstrate psychic gifts will then be brought to Geller’s home to attempt a final spoon-bending display to be witnessed by Magic Circle president David Berglass and Net users. If successful after all of these gruelling tests, the $1 million is yours (but, as with the Lottery, the money will be shared if there is more than one successful challenger).
Child’s play
“I haven’t tried bending the spoon over the Internet, and I don’t think I will until the end of the experiment. I think a child will eventually win someone in the eight to 16 age group who is open minded, without negativity, and thinks it can happen.” he predicted. Geller’s used to making predictions – his psychic feats began when he was only four years old, and he graciously retells the story.

“I bent a spoon while I was eating my soup and just thought anyone could do it. But no-one else could. Then I started performing at little parties and I was discovered by Israel’s Prime Minister, Golda Meir. A radio journalist asked her about the future, and she said: ‘Why don’t you ask Uri Geller?’ and that was my big break.”

There are plenty of skeptics on the Net who discredit Geller’s methods as trickery, and defamation lawsuits have flown between the continents. “I ignored their remarks when I was younger, but now my kids read these things, and I don’t want them to believe lies,” Geller said.

Phenomenal interest

And before you relegate him to the ‘whatever happened to?’ category, Geller appeared on ITV’s Beyond Belief with David Frost in March last year and attracted 12 million viewers. Newspaper reports say that during the show more than 2.6 million people blitzed a special hotline as Geller gave out telepathic messages, and the Scottish phone system was wiped out for several minutes. Another TV programme at the end of February caused similar mayhem. Geller also has many business interests, He claims to have the gift of dowsing, which sounds like something you do when struck by a nasty head-lice infestation, but actually involves divining and finding precious minerals using psychic powers. He works on a commission basis for several multinational companies, but says: “I can’t reveal who they are, because they like their research methods to be kept confidential”.

It all sounds very cushy. But what about those of us who don’t have any psychic powers? Never mind – Geller is releasing a book, Mindpower Kit, through Virgin Publishing, which will teach ordinary people how to bend spoons. Great. But there’s more. “It will show you how to use the powers of the mind to change your life for the better,” Geller said optimistically. “Human psychic potential is enormous, but many people just don’t know how to use it.”

And if you still can’t get enough, there’s the upcoming Geller life story on film – Mindbender- which was directed by Ken Russell, stars Terence Stamp and is due for release in April 1996. As an additional attraction, at the end of the film, Geller appears on-screen for a couple of minutes and performs the “first ever” interactive psychic experiment with a movie audience. Don’t forget to take along your broken clocks and spare kitchen utensils.

“Uri Geller gave an absolutely resonating talk on his life and career. He had every single magician in the room on the edge of their seats trying to digest as much information as they could. Uri emphasized that the path to frame is through uniqueness and charisma and that professional entertainers must be creative in their pursuits of success and never shy away from publicity.”
