Cyclist Ruth crosses the finish line five months after cheating death
Geller touch aids accident victim to run marathon
A WOMAN who almost died in a cycling accident five months ago, completed the London Marathon yesterday.
Ruth Steward, 31, from Wigan, received “psychic coaching” from Uri Geller to help her prepare for the race.
Yesterday the man with the amazing mental powers placed his hands on her head, neck and a painful tendon in her right leg at the race start in Blackheath.
Later Ruth, a political assistant with the League Against Cruel Sports, said:
“I finished in 4hr 10min, which is good considering my accident. It wasn’t the time I wanted, because I’ve done 3hr 57min before, but when you think that I neatly died just five months ago tomorrow, I think I can pat myself on the back.”
Her skull was fractured in two places and she had to have a clot removed from her brain when she went over the handlebars after an object in the road became jammed in the brake block of her cycle last November.
Fortunately, the accident happened near the Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel east London.
She ran to raise money for London’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Service, which has helped similar cases.
Ruth, living in Shadwell, east London, contacted Uri after getting muscle ache.
Last night she said: “I think he has helped so much. There’s a point where everything in your being is telling you just to give up, to slow down, stop, walk or just go home. I ran past my flat twice on the route, it’s tempting to pop in for a cup of tea.”
