JEAN MILLAY, Ph.D. (Human Science, Saybrook Institute) is the art director for the development of interactive educational software at DynEd International, Foster City, California. She is the author of various publications on the subject of brain wave synchronization, telepathy, and visionary experience. She has taught numerous college classes in biofeedback and parapsychology. In 1971, Dr. Millay co-invented (with Tim Scully) the stereo brain wave biofeedback light sculpture, a device that compares brain waves between two persons or between one’s own cerebral hemispheres and feeds that information back as aesthetic patterns of light and sound. This was demonstrated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in May 1972. Dr. Millay is past president of the Parapsychology Research Group.

To Whom it May Concern,

Uri Geller is exceptionally accurate at receiving information telepathically (mind to mind). He is also able to receive information about places and things at a distance (remote viewing). In addition, he has bent metal objects using only his direct intention, with barely a touch of his fingers.

The reason that I know this to be true is because I participated in the experiments at Stanford Research International (SRI) in 1973 when the Parapsychology Research Team Studied his abilities. During several sessions that year, I was asked to draw pictures so that Uri could try to receive them at a distance. Most of the times we did this, he was locked into an electro-magnetically shielded room. Different rooms around the SRI complex were tried. Once Russell Targ and myself were locked in an EM room, while Uri was outside. However, the distractions outside seemed to diminish his accuracy somewhat. It was easier for him to visualize the target while isolated in the quiet space of the EM room. My own psychic ability allowed me to “feel” whether he had “received” the image accurately or not, and to change my “sending” strategies if I felt that he had received only a partial image or had interpreted the concept with a wrong image. His remarkable skills later influenced the way I conducted my own research on telepathic communication. The results of my work have been published over the years, and a bibliography is attached to this statement.

Strange events sometimes happened around his energy. A magnet, which was holding a picture to a file cabinet, flew off as he walked by. He was not even paying any attention to it. A spoon broke the very moment we sat down to lunch in a restaurant, in the next moment the fork tines curled up. Uri was also surprised at the suddenness of that event, and we wondered together why such things happened around him at that time.

Most of the PK experiments (for bending metal or laser beams) which were set up for Uri to do at SRI, which I observed, were well thought out experiments. However, the ambiance was wrong. ‘There were far too many distractions (phone call interruptions, etc.), he could not focus his attention, and at first he was unsuccessful.

On the winter solstice of 1973, however, amazing things happened which I personally witnessed. Russell Targ had shown me several 6″ long pieces of 3/8″ cold rolled steel bars which he said had been cut from one single piece. He had hoped that Uri might bend one of them so it could be compared with the ones which had not been touched by Uri. A paper with horizontal lines had been pinned to the wall. A small table with two chairs was set in front of that, and in back was a black and white 1972 type TV monitor. Uri was given a box of metal objects and asked to choose one that he might feel comfortable to bend. He and I were sitting in the two chairs, not touching, just very close. Uri asked me what I thought he should try. I suggested the steel bar, thinking that Russell would be pleased. Russell Targ was outside the room watching the monitor. Hal Puthoff was operating the camera. The room became quiet, the moment of focus began. By the time I thought to ask him to roll the bar on the table first, he was already into his process, and I didn’t want to be the cause another distraction. The camera never left its focus an Uri’s hands or the bar. Uri held it in his left hand and gently stroked the top of it with only the forefinger of his right hand. Since the camera would catch all the visuals, I closed my eyes in order to synchronize my brainwaves with his, or to “feel” what his EEG might be like. For a time he was producing Alpha rhythms, and then suddenly a different type of energy (my EEG was completely unfamiliar with it) flashed across our silence. My eyes automatically popped open, at which time Uri quietly said to me, I think it’s working. Within perhaps six seconds, I watched closely as the steel bar began to bend. The bend was slight, the video camera was so crude that it could not detect it. However, we then rolled it on the table, only to have it flop irregularly. It had been bent without any mechanical force.

Russell Targ came in, and said that the recorded evidence of PK was not good enough, would Uri be willing to do it again. Uri was crushed. A miracle had been performed and it was not good enough. He became depressed. We got him some chocolate candy from the machine, and Phylis Cole and I gave him a neck rub, talking to him in positive terms. Eventually, he said he would try again. Then the energy of the room began to rise again. Pat Price came to the doorway and added his attention. This time Uri chose steel tweezers from the box of metal items. He rubbed it along the top as before. Soon he squeezed the parts together, and then the bottom part fell to the table with a clunk. We all cheered. The video could see it well. Engineers from other departments down the hall were already very grumpy and on the attack. Their point of view was clear and simple, “It, couldn’t happen, therefore it didn’t.”

SRI did not publish the results of this work. It took a year before the article about the remote viewing was published in NATURE (1974; 252: 602-607). Russell Targ and I are still friends, but we differed greatly at the time about that event. He would not publish anything about it, because he said the evidence was not strong enough to stand up to the kind of attacks that he was learning to expect. He felt the whole parapsychology department at SRI would be closed down, and not be able to continue. He was probably right, because the subsequent books, that have been added to the literature because of their continued research, have contributed much to the field (Mind Reach, 1977; Mind Race, 1984; Mind and Large.)

Currently, I am the President of the Parapsychology Research Group. To celebrate our 25 years of existence, I have encouraged our members to report and write about their research to be published in a book. Beverly Kane, M.D., Dean Brown, Ph.D., and I have edited this book and Praeger has agreed to publish it in the fall. The title is SILVER THREADS, 25 YEARS OF PSYCHICAL RESEARCH. There are contributions by 25 well known people from many disciplines. This book is an anthology of world-views expressed from different perspectives and in different idioms.

The areas in which we present our findings are:

Remote viewing and telepathy
Psychokinesis
Analogies of physics and other sciences
States of consciousness and state-dependent processes
Methodology and experimental design
Medicine and Healing
In my chapter, EXPLORING THE VISIONARY EXPERIENCE, I also mention some of the things that I learned from Uri Geller, and how he has influenced my work.

When I was told that the American Association for the Advancement of Science had hired a magician to speak against psychic research, I was appalled. I was also told that at the end of his talk, during the question period, he had mentioned my name (I still used my ex-husband’s name, Mayo, because of the children in those days). He has never met me or questioned me, yet when Jeffrey Mishlove told me that he said that I was “Uri’s secret accomplice slipping him messages under the door”, I hired a lawyer to send a letter to him and to the publisher of his book to have him withdraw his remarks. In his answer to my letter, he did not deny that he had said such things, in fact he threatened to continue his attacks. However, he did have to find a new publisher, and the remarks about me were not repeated in the book.

Today, I swear before a notary, that these things which I have said are true to the best of my memory. Uri Geller has developed impressive psychic abilities, and I have seen metal bending under his intention to do so.

“Uri Geller gave an absolutely resonating talk on his life and career. He had every single magician in the room on the edge of their seats trying to digest as much information as they could. Uri emphasized that the path to frame is through uniqueness and charisma and that professional entertainers must be creative in their pursuits of success and never shy away from publicity.”
