My Millenium
Times Metro
October 2 to October 8, 1999
Uri Geller
After 18 months of sifting Y2K horror stories for my syndicated Countdown to the Millenium column, my nightmares are filled with imploding nuclear power plants, rampaging mobs of looters and mutant PCs that shoot death rays at anyone trying to use Microsoft products on 1/1/2000. Most survivalist websites suggest I should take a year’s stock of food and hide on a remote island – St Helena is a popular choice I believe.
If my nerve holds, I will stay in Britain and celebrate at midnight on December 31, 1999 with my wife Hanna, my children Daniel and Natalie, my mother and my vrother-in-law Shipi. Though my plans aren’t yet hard and fast, I am looking forward to it. It’s a unique occasion and a chance for the world to change for the better. There are a million reasons why we should set ourselves higher standards of behaviour, but good reasons are never enough – humanity needs potent symbols, like the Live Aid concert or the fall of the Berlin Wall. The dawn of a new millenium is such a symbol.
Uri Geller’s new book Mind Medicine is published by Element Books on October 4.
