My Sunday – Sunday Express – November 28, 1999

November 28, 1999
Of the past eight Sundays, I’ve spent seven on aeroplanes. I could sum up my Sundays in 1999 by saying: board 18-hour flight, warn attendant to bring plastic cutlery, sit and write and meditate and write and meditate and…
But if I’m at home, Sundays are bliss. My daughter won’t be at school and my son is home from the London School of Economics, and I love to have my family around me. I walk the dogs on the towpath beside the Thames. The gardens of my home stretch down to the river and I have five dogs. The river throngs with boaters on a Sunday, and I spend an hour being greeted. I love to be recognised, it’s like having a world full of friends. My childhood was solitary; I was ostracised at school because of my strange Powers. To meet so many cheerful, smiling strangers is a constant reminder to me that our world is, at it’s heart, positive and loving.
