Nice people really are a hell of a lot happier…says news study!
Psychologists are now beginning to reaise that they were wrong to tell people to be selfish, and that we are happiest when we think of others, a Duke University study shows.
“What we find now is that people are happier when they’re generous, caring and concerned for others,” declared Dr. Michael Wallach, who did an indepth study of the subject.
The theory that selfishness is good reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s when psychologists pushed the idea that self-expression and self-fulfillment were the only ways to good mental health.
“But we found that people who do this often are not happy – and happiness is needed for good mental health,” said Dr. Wallach, who coauthored the five-year study.
“The people who are happy are those who are generous and caring for others and have moved away from being totally involved with just themselves.
“This is because it’s in keeping with our nature to be unselfish. We are built in such a way that we really do want to care and have concern for others.
Not to give play to these feelings is to go against our nature.”
