How Uri tried to bend that fateful penalty
MIND-bender Uri Geller was prevented by police from helping England beat Germany at Wembley, we can reveal.
Uri, an avid England fan, tried to use his incredible psychic skills to will Gareth Southgate’s crucial penalty into the
net.
But as he tried to get into a better position by the goalmouth he was challenged by three police officers and escorted away.
“They were very high-handed about it,” Uri said last night. “I knew I could have helped Gareth Southgate score but they wouldn’t let me get close enough. I feel upset and devastated about it.”
“I knew as soon as Gareth Southgate stepped up to take that penalty that he needed help. I felt I had to try to do something about it.” Uri also felt aggrieved that Terry Venables prevented him from giving the England team a psychic coaching session before the crunch game.
“I offered my services but he wouldn’t let me speak to the players. It might have just made the difference,” he said.
And he had this advice for devastated Gareth Southgate: “You must get psychological help to beat the depression you are now feeling. You must not let it go on eating away at you for weeks and weeks.”
A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “Our officers would not have wanted to do anything that would have stopped England winning but security has to be the first priority.”
